I am swimming across Lake Tahoe, in the dark, following a kayak with glow sticks attached to the side.

The first thought in my head is “what in the name of all the unholy bleeping heck am I do?!?” mainly because my goggles had decided 5 minutes earlier to cease their see-through function and all I saw when I lifted my head to breathe was a water-blurry-starry scene of nothingness, but mostly becauseĀ I was swimming across Lake Tahoe, in the dark, following a kayak with glow sticks attached to the side. WTF?!

But following the kayak I was. And it was all I had to think about. It was all I had to worry about.

About an hour into this epic 10.5 mile and what would be a six and a half hour journey when I was able to finally settle in and let my brain clear a thought struck me

In the Dark just Follow the Kayak.

And blam-o, open water swimming had taught me yet another life lesson.

I find myself in the dark a lot. What’s my kayak? Where are the glow sticks? How can I just give over and let them lead me back to the sunrise?

Because it will. The kayak will always get you to the morning.
